Mr. Ronan was born in Chicago and raised in Kansas City. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1972, Washburn University in 1977 and Washburn University Law School in 1980. He worked his way through college and law school by delivering televisions and appliances, working as a bank teller, working as an activity director for the YMCA and as a law clerk.

As a law student, Mr. Ronan was always interested in trial work. He obtained his first trial experience in the Washburn University Law Clinic. After graduating from law school, Mr. Ronan was elected County Attorney in Butler County, Kansas. During his tenure as county attorney, Mr. Ronan averaged 12 jury trials per year, including a number of high profile murder cases, and his conviction rate was over 95%.
